Introduction To Otherkin

"Otherkin is a subculture made up of people who consider themselves non-human or having a connection to a mythical archetype in some way, usually believing to be mythological or legendary creatures. The otherkin community grew out of the elven online community of the early-to-mid-1990s, with the earliest recorded use of the term 'otherkin' appearing in early 1996. Outside of their own subculture, otherkin beliefs are often met with controversy..." --Wikipedia
"Otherkin is a collective noun for an assortment of people who have come to the somewhat unorthodox, and possibly quite bizarre, conclusion that they identify themselves as being somewhat other than human. It is also the label used by a number of communities both on and offline." --Otherkin.net
"Otherkin are wacky furries who hate the environment and have a marked inability to use proper spelling, punctuation, etc. If they are here for a purpose, that purpose would seem to be to inspire the building of more prisons for the criminally insane.
Otherkin insist that they are not human, so, though still illegal, hunting them for sport should not be considered murder." --Otherkinhater, from Urban Dictionary

"About two nights ago, I had a dream that I ran into one of these people. It was pretty detailed and I remember exactly what he looked like: Frizzy, greasy hair, denim shorts, velcro sandles, glasses, overweight, and a black, stained shirt that said ' You laugh because I'm different, I laugh because you're all the same.' I knew what he was and instantly hated him. Being the angry person that I am I just started beating the shit out of him and screaming 'Who's gonna save your fairy ass now?!' This lasted for quite a while but eventually the crying and the vain attempts to protect himself with very soft, white hands disgusted me so I shoved him against a wall, gave him the finger, then walked away..." --SoulJacker, from Portal of Evil Forums (He's speaking of otherkin, by the way.)

The opinions and feelings against/for otherkin can vary from neutral to very hostile, as you can see from the above quotes. The concept of otherkin isn't widely accepted outside of the otherkin community, being rejected even by the pagan community (which is wrongfully sided with otherkin). While the pagains believe in fae and such, it is nearly impossible for them to accept that one might be incarnated in a human body and walk among them. Of course, there are those who are open to the idea, and are not so hostile towards otherkin, but these things are like the weather and can change pretty quickly.

The Otherkin are argued to be either insane, either possession some form of clinical lycanthropy or schizophrenic, misguided pagans, or genuinly being what they say they are. Outside of the otherkin community, though, otherkin are viewed more by a harsher perspective than a neutral one, from my personal observations. There are those who are kinder, though. It is often seen that people with extrodinary believes themselves are often more likely to remain open minded about otherkin. They tend to approach the otherkin community with a neutral view point and witness otherkin for themselves.

When broken down, the term otherkin would be made up of two words: Other and Kin. According to Webster's Dictionary, other is defined as 'not the same; different' and kin is defined as 'a group of persons of common ancestry.' When you combine the two terms, otherkin is a word meaning we are different, but related.

The otherkin are known by other labels, such as Kith, Faeborn, Changelings, Meta-humans (for gamers), among others. The term 'Otherkin,' though, is more popular.

What is an Otherkin?

An otherkin is a person who describes themselves to be something other than human. While they are aware they are human physically, they feel that their souls are of other origins. There are two types of otherkin: those who have been non-human in past lives, and those who are non-human in soul (meaning when they die, they won't be human and won't go to a human afterlife).

An otherkin can be an angel, elf, dragon, faerie, or even something different that isn't in human mythology, such as Ancients or Guardians. (I'll explain these later.)

It should be noted that otherkin don't believe they are a REAL LIFE dragon or angel, but the attributes of those creatures comes close to what they feel. The terms used by otherkin are misleading, and limiting, to what the person really means, but it's the easiest way for people new to otherkin, and the general public, to understand.

For example, an elf isn't a one of santa's little helpers and they don't make shoes. They are deep thinking people with a close connection to their environment. A dragon isn't a dragon that you see in myths, with the fire breathing and the eating of the innocent young woman; they are sentient creatures with intelligence and culture.

Who are otherkin?

Despite popular opinion, Otherkin arn't just role-playing teenagers or computer geeks. They can be ANYONE and even everyone around you. They can be you're child's teacher at school, or your doctor or psychiatrist. They can be the homeless person on the street corner, or the clerk at the grocery store. They can be the rock star your kid listens to, or the guy that always parks in your parking spot.

They can be your brother, your sister, your mother or father. They can be your next door neighbor, your grandmother, your grandfather. They can be anyone.

They can even be you.

What does it mean to be otherkin?

For this question, Michelle Belanger answered it best:

"Being Otherkin is not easy. Nor is it really a choice. While an Otherkin's nature is often accompanied with a predilection for magick and spirituality, "Otherkin" is neither a religion nor a spiritual path. It is simply a state of being.

Being Otherkin means never quite feeling comfortable in your own skin and never quite feeling like you belong in the reality around you. Imagine being born into a foreign world, yet remembering all the rules of behavior that you had learned in your previous existence. Furthermore, imagine knowing at the core of your very soul that you were once something very different from what  you are now, but being unable to really prove this to others--or even to yourself. That is the essence of Otherkin." --Michelle Belanger, from House of Kheperu

Can a person become otherkin?

No, a person cannot become otherkin. Otherkin are not made, they are born. It is something that has been with you since you were a small child, and never died as you grew older. It is an inherent difference that you have felt your entire life and never had a name for. You cannot become otherkin. You have to be born that way. There are those that will argue, but there is nothing to argue. Otherkin are born the way they are, and it doesn't matter what they do or say, they will remain that way their entire lives. Otherkin are Otherkin.

Otherkin will always know another otherkin. It is jokingly called the 'Otherkin Radar.' If another is not otherkin, then it will not happen, even if they do think they are otherkin. You cannot become otherkin, and that's just the bottom line.

Are Otherkin Insane?

As an otherkin progresses through their awakening, they often come to the conclusion that they are completely, and wholey, insane, but it is better to be insane and happy, than sane and miserable. You cannot think of yourself as a dragon and not also think--at one point or another--that you belong in the coocoo hut with the rest of the nutcases, but let's see it from another's point of view:

"I'll be honest. When I first started working with this aspect of the community, I didn't really believe in Otherkin. I accepted their beliefs as they were presented to me, and I accepted that these beliefs were sincerely held by the people who explained them. I was able to rationalize the whole schema to myself in terms of archtypes and totems, and this is how I approached the whole subculture.

But even though I reluctantly accepted that these people believed these things, I had trouble admitting to my friends that I was traveling six hours to attend a weekend of lectures and seminars where most if not all of the speakers believed themselves to be elves, dragons, or fey.

Then I attended the event. What I felt and saw there, more than anything else, made a believer out of me.

Once you have seen them, and have known what you are looking at, there is no arguing that Otherkin wear their otherness outside as well as within. While a number of Otherkin sport fashions influenced by various subcultures, from punk to Goth to SCAdian, this "other" feel has nothing to do with their chosen style of cloths. If you lined the Otherkin up side by side with a group of mundanes, and everyone was wearing Abercrombie & Fitch, you would still be able to spot the 'kin.

Aside from the ineffable sense of otherness that always clings to them --and I can attest that this goes down to the level fo their very energy--most Otherkin have distinctive physical quirks that present the most eloquent arguement for their not-quite-human nature.

The elves might not look like Legolas, but in general they are all tall individuals with thin, long limbs. They're frequently blond and have distinctive aquiline features. Some even have subtle yet noticeable points to their ears. Cat-kin exude feline sensuality and grace, and faeiries are small, fine-boned people, with delicate features that can only be described as fey. After a short time among the Otherkin at the convention, I could pretty much identify the main types by sight, because their characteristics are that marked, even across the boundaries of gender, ethnicity and race." --Michelle Belanger, from House of Kheperu

There are those that say otherkin are schizophrenics (To see the write up I did on schizophrenia, go here. It's only a short page, but it does give the types of schizophrenia and whatnot.) and truly insane, delusional--whatever word they wish to use, but they forget that those who are insane, delusional--you choose the word--don't typically go through the period of 'OMG! Am I insane?' and progress to 'I am a total lunatic.' As all otherkin I have met say, 'It is better to be insane and happy, than sane and miserable.' Otherkin DO go through periods of outright denial, and they do often come to the conclusion that they are insane and do need help. There are many times that otherkin DO seek help for these problems, but I've not heard of anyone that acutally said a shrink acutally helped them with problems that are otherkin based. There are those people out there that do have a really hard time accepting that they are otherkin, and often spend years running from it, or even try to kill themselves (I've met a person like this, so it's not a joke, nor made up).

Otherkin do go through a period of serious self-questioning--trying to figure out the whys, whats, whens and how of things. The beliefs go through personal skepticism. Otherkin question and question themselves time and time again. There are those execptions, but there will always be things like that. There are exceptions in every community--majikal or not.

How do Otherkin become aware of being Otherkin?

When an individual hits a certain age (and the age does vary from person to person), the feeling of being different--that all otherkin have throughout their lives or at one point or another--begins to come into a focused clarity. They begin to reevaluate their lives, questioning themselves and the world around them. They begin to notice how they are different, and also how others are different from them. They may feel changes taking place because of this reevaluation, such as a new conciousness, new thoughts, beliefs or even ways of living (it differs). At one point, they being to realize that at the base of this 'different' feeling is a non-human origin.

When a person is in denial though, these feelings can go partially unnoticed, building and causing emtional stress--unexplained depression, anger, anxiety...etc. It can cause their lives to become very difficult, and even traumatic. The supressed feelings, thoughts and whatnot often build until they refused to be held any longer. It can cause any number of problems, any of which could be dangerous. When this happens, a person usually in a sort of traumatized state.

There are, at times, those processes that are inbetween, neither very hard nor very easy.

The process that these people go through is called an Awakening. It can vary in length from person to person, maybe coming in quick and painlessly, or be drawn out and painful. An awakening is unique to the person that is experienceing it, and the age at which it occurs often varies too. Anybody can awaken, and it is NOT limited to a certain age, nationality, intelligence level, or background. A person can be perfectly normal one day, and be otherkin the next. There is nobody that knows for certain what causes an awakening. When it happens, it happens, and triggers are different from person to person. The only trait all otherkin share is that they were different from others even before the awakening and discovering their otherkin nature didn't cause it. In some cases, an awakenings rubs the rough edges off that 'different' feeling and allows people to live peacefully. (In some cases, it even clears up medical problems and whatnot. For example, people who are sick all the time, are suddenly finding themselves with a strong immune system, or a person who is chronically depressed will find themselves very happy and content. The effects do vary from person to person.)

If your otherkin nature cause you more problems than it solves, then there is a problem, and you probably have something wrong with you. If this does happen, I suggest medical attention, because that is not normal. Discovering your otherkin nature should solve problems, not cause them. When a person awakens, things are explained and they become clear. While it is hard, it shouldn't toss their lives to the gutters, thats if they're not in denial. It should clarify things for you, and solve more problems than it causes.

What are the speices of otherkin?

The species of otherkin are very vast, and way too many to name. There are the major types that can be named, but they're mostly numbering in the large types too. It is much like the speices of Earth; while there are your majors, there are also others, not all of them named and discovered.

The same otherkin species can, unfortunatly, fit into more than one catagory, so this makes describing and cataloging them all difficult.

The species are:

  • Dragons
There are many races of dragons, almost as many as there are stars, but not all of them come from the same place. One race of dragons may not be from the same place another dragon race will be from. The origins and nature of the dragons can vary from race to race. They can be very beast like, or rather sophisticated. Due to their size, though, they won't have technology like other races would, but something like it. They are strong people, and there are some races that far surpass many others in wisdom and intelligence. They do not always resemble a dragon of earth, but can have similar attributes. A dragon is never a dragon you see in mythology, because even the most beast like dragons can reason. The most pronounced traits of all dragons are their warrior like personalities and their often strong distaste of human, even when they are human in form. (They are noble creatures, usually, who value the good qualities, such as honesty. To dragons, humans are very confusing, and gigantic curiousities because of what is seen as a dark nature. They view humans as out of control and destructive--children, really--so this creates tension.)
    • Star/Celestial Dragons
    • Chaos Dragons
    • Amphitere
    • Draconid
    • Fae Dragon
    • Sea Serpent
    • Fire Serpent

    • Wyvern
    • Hydra
    • Dimar
    • Dracolich
    • Pernese Dragon
    • Mouse Dragon
    • Western Dragon
    • Eastern Dragon
    • Too many dragon races to name.
  • Fae
While many races fall under this lable, they don't always fit the label itself. The term 'fae' is more of a convenience than anything else. There are very many races in this catagory, and not all of them are from Earth. The list in nearly infinite. They all differ in form, origins and even biological make up. They are usually grouped together under the lable of fae due to their vibrancy, in more than one area, as well as their tendencies to be pranksters. In other words, if you're going to a really nice restraunt, you wouldn't want to take a fae as a dinner date if you care about what people think of you. They enjoy like to the fullest, and humanity can be rather dull and depressing for them (or they can find them to be wonderful toys). While it does differ due to the variety that fall into this catagory, they may have the above opinion of humans. Fae can be sophisticated or childlike or even beast like. It can differ, so keep that in mind!

        ...and it goes on...
    • Satyrs
    • Unicorns
    • Mermaids
    • Windigos
      ...and it goes on...
  • Elves
As far as I can tell, nobody really remembers where the elves originally came from or even what the name of their speices acutally was. The elves do not even know, simply calling their home world 'Elfhome' (english translation) and refering to themselves as elenari or elves. The elves are very close to nature, and to the flow of things. When they resemble their elven forms as humans, they are all tall with wiry builds and good senses (hearing, smell, sight...etc). Their complexions can vary, as can their appearance. While one race of elves may have pointed ears, another can have normal round ones, and another can have one with multiple points to their ears. They're skin can be very close to a human color, or they can be blue or silver. The appearance depends on their origins, and habitat. They are designed for specific areas. Unless they are of a dark nature, such as dark elves, the elves are usually pleasant people. Their original home world is said to be a perfect paradise. It's unknown what happened to cause them to leave, or even if they all left at all.
    • Tulari
    • Listari
    • Elenari
    • Dark Elves
    • Moon Elves
    • Silver Elves
    • Light Elves
    • Tuatha De Denaan
      ...and it goes on...
  • Ancients
Ancients are very old beings, among the oldest in any of the universes. They are very wise and possess a great amount of knowledge. They are caretakers of universes and anyone within them. They are like great parents, nurturing and looking after their children. They have great power, and are keepers of knowledge. They have different roles, and some often travel from world to world seeing to their development, sometimes incarnating to aid the people they are currently looking after. Ancients can also fall under the catagory of 'celestial,' but they are not a species. Being an ancient is like being the president.
  • Shades
While little is known of their origins, or even what they call themselves, shades are litterally shadows. They appear completely black, and often inhabit darkened places because of this. They're a warrior race, and happen to be very adaptable. I am not sure if there are different races to shades. There is little said of them.
  • Eternals
Basically, eternals are immortals. There isn't much known of them, other than the fact that they can't die. They vary in power and power level, as well as appearance. It's not clear on if they're an acutal race or a state given to an individual.
  • Angels
Despite their names, the angelics do not serve God, or any god in particular. They are keepers of harmony, peace and order. Their origins are with The Source, but they are children to it, not servants. They are mostly just bright light, having forms to whatever happens to be more comfortable for the angelic or the person viewing them. They do not serve humanity at all, but serve all people. They fall into many catagories, depending on what they do, and they can vary in power level. While they can be called celestials, they are different from celestials. All angelics are celestials, but not all celestials are angelics.
    • Seraphim
    • Cherubim
    • Ophanim
    • Dominions
    • Virtues
    • Powers
    • Archai
    • Archangels
    • Angels
    • Nephelim
  • Demons
Again, despite their names, the demons are not all evil, or serve an evil entity. They are people, just as humans are people, and can vary in personality, appearance and strengths. While I am not sure of their origins, they are usually a strong, and sometimes aggressive species. They do not have ties to The Source, but can help angelics if needed. They are dark natured, but keep in mind that light and darkness have nothing to do with good and evil. The four are separate, but sometimes come together. A demon can be good while an angel is evil. It does differ, because they are people.
    • Chaos
    • Incubus
    • Sucubus
    • Shadows
    • Imps
      ...and it goes on...
  • Weres/Therians (animals in human bodies)
Weres are animals in human form. (There are those that prefer a different definition, such as a human with deep nature ties, but this is one that I've seen used most.) They are native to Earth, and are not celestial in origin.  Although, gryphons and dragons along with other mythical animal creatures can toss themselves under this catagory.
    • Commence list of all species of animals to have inhabited Earth
  • Celestials
This is a very broad term. There are millions, litterally millions, of races under this lable. The list can go on forever, and the appearances differences are infinite. There are different personalities, appearances, natures, names, cultures and basically anything you can think of. Celestials are from the stars in origins, coming from different galaxies and planets. They arn't always native to this universe, though, and can cross into this universe from another. There are spieces such as the elenari that can fall under here.
    • Draconians
    • Pleidians
    • Arcturians
    • Noms
    • Orbs
    • Carians
    • Offworld speices usually fall under here.
  • Pheonix
These are large birds of fire, but they're also very shy. They are good natured, and gentle. They are not overly fond of contact, but only enjoy it for short periods of time. They fly from place to place, mostly, unless they are mating, or mated to another. I do not know much about them.
  • Kitsune
The kitsune are a fox race, devious and swift as well as appearing proper. They are usually well mannered, unless they are in heat, then they can get rather odd. They are fox like in appearance, but their colors can vary, and they don't have just one tail. They also happen to be spirit in form. While their resemblance is to a fox, they are not acutally foxes, which can confuse people.
  • Naja
The naja are the snake people. They border antisocial, and are a tough speices. They are half man half snake, if I remember correctly. They are not like other species, in terms of power and such, but they are good with weapons. Whether or not they have abilities such as telepathy and empathy are questionable, though. I am not too clear on the naja.
  • Starseeds
The starseeds are often seen as hybrids of alien-human origin, or of an alien inhabiting a body modified to fit it's purpose. They often bleed into the catagories of 'indigo children' and crystal children,' but are mostly still considered otherkin because of their natures. They will often be of Earth origin, though.
  • Vampires
While the vampires are a separate community, there are those within that community that qualify as otherkin, since their vampire nature stems from an otherkin nature. There are vampiric otherkin speices---such as some of the races of dark fae and some race of demons.
    ...and it goes on...

The list of otherkin species can litterally go on forever. It is a VERY long list, and not all of the speices listed will be known to humanity. The otherkin speices that are from off planet can usually be summed up as 'Celestials.' It is said that all angelics are celestials, but not all celestials are angelics. What this is saying is that, all angels are from the sky, and are angels, but celestials that are from the same place aren't necessarily angelics.

While there are many otherkin speices, not all of them are from offworld. There are those--such as elementals and fae--who originate right here on Earth. Their homes are long gone, though, living only in the legends humanity tells. They were destroyed with the advancement of mankind, and the destruction mankind has rained down on nature. When nature began to die, so did they. It is said that they can no longer incarnate in their true forms, often existing in different dimensions, because their bodies can no longer stand what humanity has done to Earth. There is too many chemicals, too much pollution and whatnot for true forms to survive here.

Why are Otherkin here?

There are many reason that otherkin come to Earth. Those reason change from person to person, some very good and some not so good. They range from being exiled, to it simply being the 'cool thing' to do. There are many reasons, as there are many otherkin.

Here are some of them:

  • Educational Reason
  • Exiled
  • Relocated
  • Trends
  • Heal Earth
  • Help in Coming changes
  • Prison

There are many reasons, and these are just a few. I have been around the community, and these are some of the reasons I have seen so far. There are others, but these are the easiest to list. Otherkin are people too, regardless if they aren't like the majority on the planet. It doesn't make someone less of a person if they have a tail, extra limbs and so on.

Overview

The Otherkin community is very diverse, made up of people from all walks of life. While they are otherkin, they are also people, living their lives from day to day. It is an interesting community, and while it's rather bizzare on the outside, the inside is interesting and often not as bizarre as it first appears.

A quote from Michelle Belanger:

"...if you believe in a soul, you probably believe that the soul is immortal. However, if you just take a few moments to look around this world, you know that cities and cultures and even races of beings are in no way eternal. In time, all physical things fade and die. Even this world, as long-lived as it may be when viewd from a human scope of things, is finite, and it will eventually become a burnt-out cinder, consumed by the sun.

So where do all the souls go when there are no bodies to incarnate within? What will become of those spirits born into humanity when humanity is a long-distant dream?

Given that the soul is immortal, that time is infinit, and worlds are not, it only follows that each of us has been many different things. In a sense, prehaps we are all Otherkin, as we have undoubtedly lived as something else before, however remote this might be in our memory. The only thing that distinguishes them from us is the immediacy of recollection. The foreign past still clings palpably to them, and they recall a form not quite as prosaic as the mortal flesh we all now wear.

There are so many things in this vast Universe that cannot be known, who is to say that somewhere, in some half-remembered reality, beings like dragons didn't own the skies? And what a wonder if they walked among us now, remembering an existence many people cannot even conceive." --Michelle Belanger, House Kheperu

We are all people, and we are all unique from each other. We learn. We grow. We explore the mysteries of our own existence. We find things to explain these feelings, thoughts and whatever may be compiled beneath our skin to make us who we are. We can believe in science, or we can believe in religion or even spirituality, but we all believe in something, or a combination of things. We are people, and beliefs is apart of who and what we are. We cannot escape them any more than we can escape our DNA or family. They are apart of us and shall always be that way. Otherkin are people, and they have something they cannot escape from, no matter how fast or how far they run. Their beliefs are different from the main stream, as Catholics are different from Jews. We are people, and we are different. It is the way of things.

The following is a poem I found. I am not sure who wrote it, but I know it was an otherkin, and about otherkin. If anybody knows the author, can you please contact me? It is a lovely poem and it's a shame there is nobody to take credit for it.

Otherkin
Author Unknown

I am deprived of every skill,
My pride has been taken
I have become special,
That is my punishment,
My mate will never know me,
My friends will never show me,
The delight that I once was,
I have been changed,
I am human now.
