I Dont really think phpbb is as good as vbulletin.

The only competitors for vbulletin is IPB And SMF.
SMF Is Free And Is What I Think The Best Free Forum Software So Far.

IPB Is The Best Forum Software Ever Made By Far If You Have Alot Of Money There Shouldnt Be Anything Stopping You.

Among the open-scripts one, I have used both phpBB3 and SMF. phpBB3 always takes the lead. It has got more mods, themes etc. On the other hand, SMF doesn’t give you much features as compared to phpBB3.
