Default Keyword Density & SEO

Everyone loves a little SEO - it's good for the soul!

Unless you're new to SEO, you already know placing keywords and keyword phrases in your website's content, headings, titles, menus, etc. are a great way to help your search engine optimization.

The question is, how many times should you repeat a keyword or keyword phrase? Does repeating the keyword 10 times rank your page better than if you repeat it only twice on your page?

The true answer is, no one is sure. Our buddy Matt Cutts (the head guy over at Google Search) keeps the Google search algorithm a secret. But what we do know is keywords and phrases do matter.

So here's what you can do to cover your butt.

Let's say our keyword phrase is "WordPress Web Hosting" (Yes, I use this example because that's what my company provides and this keyword phrase and I are old pals!).

Ideally then we'd want WordPress Web Hosting to appear in our web page's title, header tags, in the menu, in the body text (especially near the top) and perhaps in the last paragraph. The trick then is go ahead and insert your keyword into your content and headers as many times as you can until it reads silly.

Remember, write your content for humans, not Googlebot.

Then read your content out loud. If all the keywords sound silly, remove some, or to think of it another way, insert your keywords, read it out loud and if it doesn't sound bad, add some more. Keep doing this until your content sounds stupid, then back it off some.

Ok, the school bell has rung and you're free to go.

That's right. Anyway if you are doing this it is a good idea to check the keyword density when the page is finished. Because it may happen the density become very high.

Most marketers advise to use 3 - 6% keyword density.
