    Hi falcon,

Having just launched a product I'm going to explore all of this - thanks!

    Hi falcon,

I spent a good couple of hours reading everything pointed to by just the first two or three of your links - but found the Google help material so difficult to follow I decided to buy a book! It has 4.5 stars on Amazon and costs just £6 (less than $10) and I'm hoping it'll save me a lot of time. Will come back and review it here when I've read it.

To do analytics, start with one item that can be tracked or verified (such as traffic area). Then check the different programs and see which one you like best. Then another area, such as amount of traffic. Soon you will get a pattern of which ones you like and what areas that they provide that you like. Use them for that. Then there will be ways that are not as easy but provide additional information that you can use.
    Examples:
Traffic (or visitor) weekly, monthly, amount summary
Traffic page views (the pages they looked at)
    Unique visitors (new visitors)
    Return visitors
    Time on page(s)
Search words or phrases (keywords used to find your site)
    Pages popularity
Visitor paths (which pages they visited-first to last)
    Visitor location (country, city, language)
    -
You want to track the information that can help you improve your traffic
What keywords they used to find your site. Which pages they visited. What pages they exited.
Then you can improve your keywords to attract more traffic. Improve your navigation, and put something on the exit pages to keep them on your site.
    -
That is why you use analytics, to improve weak areas and strengthen strong areas. When you have done this, then you want heat maps (where people click on your pages).
